Professor Trelawney loves awkward kids

I love school spirit week.  I love dressing up and I love costumes.  Especially when they are slightly awkward and people laugh at (with?) me.

My top two favorite spirit days have been Super Hero Day (Who needs Wonder Woman?  I created my own super hero:  Picture Mary Katherine Gallagher with a cape that reads "Super Nerd:  Knowledge is Power") and....Harry Potter Day.

I thought I captured Professor Trelawney quite well--long flowing hippy skirt, lots of scarves, wild frizzy hair, giant glasses, and lots of bangles and rings.  Basically, I looked a lot like this:

The reactions from the students was the best part.  Every day, I stand in the hallway outside my classroom between classes because I'm supposed to make sure students are not fighting, setting fire to the building, or (worst of all crimes) wearing a hat in the building.  In actuality, I just talk to my teacher friends whose rooms are next to mine.

Sometimes students come up and talk to us, give us high-fives, or just say hey.  Most of them ignore us.

On Harry Potter day, the awkward kids came out of their shells and talked to me (a.ka. Professor Trelawney) in the hallway.  It was awesome.  The kids that usually have their headphones plugged in, shuffling along the corridor with their heads down suddenly looked up and when they saw Professor Trelawney, you'd think they'd just met their best friend.  They perked up, actually smiled and said things like, "I know you!  You're that teacher from Harry Potter!"  Professor Trelawney makes everyone feel normal.  That's why I love her.

  1. Sorry to be your weird commenter :) I just have to say that this post would be so much better with pics of the actual costumes, but I will just stick with imagining for now. Now you make me want to go read those Potters again! Love the dress up days we had. Your parents had the Best stuff!

  2. Rach, I seriously had to look and look again to see if that WAS a picture of you. I know your costumes can get pretty real looking. Ha! So awkward!
